Ward Melville’s Steven Matz took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and, after he finally faltered, the Binghamton Mets mounted a ninth inning rally to win the Eastern League Championship in a walk-off, 2-1, against Richmond at NYSEG Stadium on Friday.

Pinch-hitter Jayce Boyd’s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth plated pinch-runner Gavin Cecchini for the winning run.

The way things are going with the Mets and Yankees, Binghamton might be the only professional New York baseball team to hoist a championship trophy this season.

And who might deliver that Eastern League championship to Binghamton, the Mets' Double-A affiliate? None other than Ward Melville's Steven Matz, the top lefthanded pitching prospect in the Mets organization.

Matz is Friday's...

Previously, only one team or the other had played in New York on Sept. 11 since 2002. The Yankees haven’t hosted a game on Sept. 11 since 2009, the only time a 9/11 game has been played at the new Yankee Stadium (they played at old Yankee Stadium on Sept. 11 three...

Binghamton had its best starter on the mound, and Steven Matz turned in a sturdy if unspectacular performance. The Mets’ offense, which was shut out on Thursday, fought back to tie the score in the sixth inning and, after falling behind again later, brought the tying run to the plate twice in the ninth.

But it wasn’t enough.

Binghamton fell, 6-3, to the Portland Sea Dogs in Game 3 of...

Reno’s team nickname is the “Aces”. If any of their other pitchers perform like Andrew Chafin did Thursday night, the moniker is well deserved.

Chafin allowed just four hits, all singles, and didn’t walk a batter during nine shutout innings as Diamondbacks affiliate Reno downed Las Vegas, 6-0, in Game 2 of the Pacific Coast League semifinals. The best-of-five series is now tied at 1-1.
