The general assumption made by the majority of baseball analysts is that Robinson Cano, arguably the top free agent on the market this Winter, will wind up back in pinstripes.
But assumptions this time of year are dangerous.
After all, who thought Albert Pujols would leave St. Louis to sign with the Angels? Or that Josh Hamilton would also take a mega-deal from the Halos? Or that the...Read more »
Mariano Rivera has been named the American League Comeback Player of the Year. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano earned the honor in the National League.
In his final MLB season, Rivera, who announced his retirement before the 2013 season, had a 2.11 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 44 saves in 64 appearances. He compiled a 6-2 record and struck out 54 batters. The 43-year-old closer was returning...Read more »
Monday delivered Curtis Granderson an opportunity to earn $14.1 million dollars as a member of the Yankees' outfield.
But, on Sunday, Granderson cashed in on a different offer -- winning a free round-trip ticket on United Airlines.
We'll save the spoiler alert to how many shots the free-agent outfielder scored on, or didn't.

For the first time in nearly two decades the Yankees have a serious shortstop problem.
Franchise icon Derek Jeter was re-signed to a one-year, $12 million deal Friday afternoon. Even without that move (more a superficial tactic made for luxury tax purposes) Jeter would have likely remained a Yankee in 2014 since he possessed a $9.5 million player option.
But Jeter appeared in just 17...Read more »
Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon clarified comments he made earlier this week regarding the team's offseason plans.
While naming some of the players that the Mets believe have "solidified" roster spots for next season, Wilpon also made some glaring omissions, including second baseman Daniel Murphy and catcher Travis d'Arnaud.
But Wilpon said that he was merely "speaking...Read more »
GARFIELD, N.J. -- Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon joined other team employees on Tuesday morning to help refurbish parts of the Boys & Girls Club here, one year after Hurricane Sandy caused severe water damage to the facility.
"To have all the kids come in later to see all this stuff freshened up will be really neat," said Wilpon, who helped workers add a new coat of...Read more »
There’s an episode of “South Park” where the kids, at the end of a long little league baseball season, decide to stop trying so they can lose and finally go home. Only problem is their competition decides to do the same thing and the two sides engage in a battle to avoid winning.
Sometimes it feels like this World Series is following the same script.
To be clear, no one is accusing any...Read more »
Robinson Cano could have one more item to add to his free agent resume now that he's been nominated for what would be his third American League Gold Glove Award at second base.
Cano's advanced defensive metrics this season were hardly overwhelming, but it was a thin AL field. Cano had six Defensive Runs Saved and an 0.8 Ultimate Zone Rating. DRS is the key defensive stat used in the oft-cited...Read more »
This is why statistically-inclined folks generally disregard the Gold Glove Award.
Rookie Juan Lagares was a defensive revelation for the Mets in center field during 2013. Among all players with at least 800 innings at one position last season, Lagares had the sixth-most Defensive Runs Saved with 26. DRS is an important stat since it’s the key defensive component in the oft-cited Wins Above...Read more »
It was a predictable reaction.
As David Ortiz's one-out, two-run home run cleared the Green Monster at Fenway Park during the sixth inning of Thursday's Game 2 of the World Series, the tweets proclaiming the October hero a Hall of Famer appeared fast and furious.
A two-time World Series champion -- and a key member of those teams -- Ortiz is bidding this year for the hat trick. A superb...Read more »
