It looks like Marlon Byrd will be back in the National League East -- and with his original team.
The outfielder, who revived his career with the Mets and Pirates in 2013, is on the verge of signing a two-year deal with the Phillies, pending a physical, according to multiple reports. The deal will pay Byrd $16 million in total, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin. That amount would be...Read more »
Tampa Bay Rays rightfielder Wil Myers and Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez were named the American League and National League rookies of the year, respectively, on Monday.
Myers finished with 23 of 30 first-place votes among two other finalists in the AL, teammate Chris Archer and Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias.
In the final vote in the NL, Fernandez had 26 first-place votes...Read more »
The Cincinnati Reds signed catcher Brayan Pena to a two-year deal Friday, and with Devin Mesoraco likely to be the 2014 starter, that makes Ryan Hanigan reportedly available.
Hanigan will be on the market at the same time that Braves catcher Brian McCann and Red Sox backstop Jarrod Saltalamacchia are free agents -- and likely looking for a big pay day.
No one will dispute that Brian...Read more »
Joe Girardi's lieutenants will all return for the 2014 season.
The Yankees announced Friday afternoon that all members of Girardi's coaching staff would be back next season: Mike Harkey (bullpen), Mick Kelleher (first base), Kevin Long (hitting), Tony Pena (bench), Larry Rothschild (pitching) and Rob Thomson (third base).
Pena is the longest-tenured member of the coaching staff, having...Read more »
There are other players in this free agent class who will get more money and more years – but few appear more coveted than Carlos Beltran.
The Cardinals outfielder could return to St. Louis. But he’s also been linked to the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers and nearly every other market with designs on contention in 2014.
And Beltran has done plenty to create the buzz that currently exists around...Read more »
Robinson Cano won his fifth American League Silver Slugger Award on Wednesday. It's the fourth straight year he's been honored as the AL's best offensive second baseman. His fifth came in 2006.
Cano was the lone New York player to win a Silver Slugger Award in 2013. He hit .314 with a team-high 27 home runs and 107 RBIs.
The Baltimore Orioles had the most Silver Sluggers of any team...Read more »

Former Yankees manager Joe Torre and his wife, Ali Torre, founded the organization in response to the impact domestic abuse had on Torre's life. The mission of the foundation is to help save lives by educating people on how to end...Read more »
The Mets have reportedly checked in with free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.
Which raises the question: Why?
Furcal was a good player from 2000-2010, generally posting solid-to-above-average fielding and offensive numbers. He was worth about 2-4 Wins Above Replacement each year (or more).
But the past three seasons, Furcal has been replacement level – or he hasn’t even...Read more »
The general assumption made by the majority of baseball analysts is that Robinson Cano, arguably the top free agent on the market this Winter, will wind up back in pinstripes.
But assumptions this time of year are dangerous.
After all, who thought Albert Pujols would leave St. Louis to sign with the Angels? Or that Josh Hamilton would also take a mega-deal from the Halos? Or that the...Read more »
Mariano Rivera has been named the American League Comeback Player of the Year. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano earned the honor in the National League.
