The Mets are expected to be in attendance a few weeks from now when free agent reliever Joel Hanrahan holds a showcase for interested teams. After using three different first baseman in their first three games of the season, the Mets have committed to giving an extended look to Lucas Duda.
Duda will start at first base against the Reds on Friday, a team insider confirmed, which pushes Ike Davis out of the picture for now. The two competed for the job during spring training, though both suffered injuries that limited their at-bats.

Frank Viola is resting comfortably with his family, the Mets announced on Wednesday, when the East Meadow native underwent heart surgery.
“From that standpoint, we’re all extremely pleased,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said of Viola, who had been promoted to Triple-A pitching coach after drawing raves for his work at Class-A Savannah.
