Mark Teixeira comes into today, after his 0-for-6, including five strikeouts, performance Saturday hitting .215. Not surprisingly, as was the case after yesterday’s game, it was a major topic of conversation with Joe Girardi.

"At this time of the year [last year] he was swinging the bat a lot better," Girardi said. "It's something you have to fight through. This game is not easy....It's tough and you go through physical battles and you go through mental battles. There's a lot of things you have to fight through. When a guy like Tex is where he's at right now, yeah, we're all a little bit surprised because we haven't seen it before."

More from Girardi: "In the game of baseball sometimes you have interesting months, sometimes you have interesting weeks, sometimes you have interesting years that you have to know how to deal with. You have to keep working. I think if someone would have said Tex would be hitting around .215 in June, you’d probably say, nah, I don’t believe that. But it is what it is and he’ll keep going at it."

He and the Yankees will go at it today against Brandon Morrow (4-4, 6.00)
