'Twisted' premieres tonight; ABC Family thriller filmed in Nyack
The teen thriller “Twisted” premieres tonight at 9 on ABC Family, and while Newsday TV critic Verne Gay didn't give it a glowing review, local viewers might be intrigued to tune in since the series features Nyack in a starring role.
“Twisted” -- think of it as “Dexter” for teens -- centers on 16-year-old Danny Desai (Avan Jogia), who returns home after killing his aunt five years earlier and tries to rebuild his relationships with his mother (Denise Richards) and best friends.
Scenes for the show’s pilot were shot in Nyack in October, and the “Twisted” cast and crew returned in May for additional filming at two Nyack eateries, the Runcible Spoon Bakery on North Broadway and the Johnny Cakes diner on Main Street.
“We love Nyack. It’s beautiful here. We filmed the pilot here and now we’re back,” said Nancea Ceo, costume designer for the show, when interviewed on location last month.
While both Runcible Spoon and Johnny Cakes were used for filming, it’s Johnny Cakes that is getting special attention from the series, since the restaurant's interior was rebuilt on a Los Angeles soundstage.
“When we were in the pilot, they spruced us up," said David Blau, manager of Johnny Cakes. "And we’re the only business where they are keeping our name. We’re hoping we’ll become famous, the way Tom’s Restaurant became famous in ‘Seinfeld.’ ”
Besides Nyack’s star turn in the series, “Twisted” also features an actor with Hudson Valley ties. Robin Givens, a Mount Vernon native and graduate of New Rochelle Academy, joined the show in a recurring role as the mother of Danny’s best friend. She shot scenes in Nyack last month along with co-stars Jogia and Aston Moio, who plays Danny’s classmate Rico.
