This is interesting only from the standpoint that both pitchers, when paired in their first bullpen session a week ago, said their natural instinct was to start the competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, even though Joe Girardi told them it was too early to think along those lines.

"He [Girardi] was a competitor himself so I’m sure if somebody told him that he’d probably let it go in one ear and out the other," Chamberlain said with a smile then. "We have a long time to go but you can’t take a day off."

Speaking the same day Hughes said, "As much as they say it’s not going to won on the first day, he’s [Girardi] still standing there so you want to make some impressions."

In a little less than an hour the pair will throw their first live BP sessions of the spring to an interesting quartet: Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano and Jesus Montero.

*** Granderson and Gardner, who worked out with a group in left field Thursday, are currently working in center field.
