Jorge Posada's AL East-clinching hit on Wednesday night may have done more than just give the longtime Yankee a moment to savor. It might have earned him a spot on the postseason roster.

Joe Girardi said Thursday night that "it helped" and that his expectation is that Posada will be on the 25-man roster for the Yankees' first-round series against the Tigers, Rangers or Angels.

"I don't have 100 percent, but I expect him to be there," Girardi said of Posada, who started at first base Thursday night against Rays lefthander Matt Moore.

Posada could get at-bats as a lefthanded designated hitter or pinch hitter in the postseason. He went into Thursday night batting .270 with 13 homers and 39 RBIs in 267 at-bats as a lefthanded hitter this season.

"You look at what Jorgie's done off righthanders -- he's been pretty decent," Girardi said.

When asked if Girardi's comment is good news, Posada smiled and said, "Yeah." When asked if he expects to be on the postseason roster, he said, "I have no idea.''
