Yankees minor league catcher Luis Torrens was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, the team announced Tuesday.
Torrens, 18, will undergo surgery Wednesday performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
Torrens will miss the 2015 season.
The 18-year-old was signed by the Yankees out of Venezuela in 2012 and has hit .249 with a .338 on-base percentage and four home runs in two minor league seasons.
Torrens spent most of last season with Single-A short season Staten Island, where he hit .270 with a .327 OBP and two home runs. He ended the year with Single-A Charleston. Torrens has thrown out 41 percent of runners attempting to steal against him during his pro career.
Baseball America ranked him as the 19th best prospect in the Yankees' system prior to the 2014 season.
