Matsui day-to-day after having left knee drained

SEATTLE - Hideki Matsui won't play Monday nightin Oakland, and Joe Girardi said the designated hitter is day-to-day after having his left knee drained yesterday.

Matsui didn't play Saturday because of stiffness in the knee and was kept out of yesterday's lineup when fluid was discovered.

"I haven't had a chance to move around yet but I think it's better than [Saturday],'' Matsui said through his interpreter.

Matsui last had his left knee drained in April and was able to pinch hit in the two games after the procedure. "I think this time it's not as bad as it was in April," Matsui said.

Girardi has been cautious all season with Matsui's knees, using him solely as a DH. Matsui is hitting .266 with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs.

"We know that this is a possibility, and that's why we are careful with him because he's really important to our lineup," Girardi said. "It's hard not having him there, but you have to be smart about it."
