So much for the half-hour Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman
spent before last night's game attempting to wave off questions about Phil Hughes by saying he remains in the rotation "right now." The Yankees announced during the seventh inning that they had placed Hughes on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique muscle strain.
Hughes, who Cashman said may miss more than 15 days, said after last night's game that he felt something the day after his start in Chicago a week ago when he woke up, but that it did not hinder him on the mound. But the oblique acted up Tuesday. He left that game after 3 2/3 innings, having allowed six earned runs. Hughes told trainer Gene Monahan of his discomfort then, and things got worse yesterday.
"I honestly didn't think it was a factor at all in anything I did," Hughes said in explaining why he waited to say anything.
Girardi and Cashman learned of Hughes' oblique problem Tuesday night, but were told by Monahan that they should wait and see how Hughes felt yesterday. When he was in greater pain, they decided he needed to be examined by Dr. Stuart Hershon.
Hughes, 21, was not on the field with the team during batting practice, nor was he available in the clubhouse to talk to reporters before the game. However, neither Girardi nor Cashman admitted any health concerns about Hughes. They talked only about his on-field struggles; he's 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts.
Girardi said then: "He's still in our rotation right now." After the game, Girardi said he did not mention any health concerns before because "I didn't know if he was going to have to miss a start."
Cashman said Darrell Rasner will take Hughes' rotation start. Rasner is 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
