The Yankees named pitcher Vidal Nuno the 2013 James P. Dawson Award winner Monday in a pregame ceremony before taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates at Steinbrenner Field. The award is given out annually to a rookie who puts up an outstanding performance during spring training.

The 25-year-old lefthander allowed only one earned run in 14.2 innings pitched over seven appearances. He also went 1-1 while recording one save.

Yankees beat writers vote on the award, which was established to honor Dawson, who started his career as a copy boy with the New York Times in 1908. He went on to cover baseball until he died during spring training in 1953.

Norm Siebern was the first receipient of the James P. Dawson Award in 1956. Other award winners include Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly and Jorge Posada. Could the award be telling of what Nuno will become? Here's a look at the complete list:
