After the Detroit Tigers' Ezequiel Carrera made a head-turning catch in centerfield Monday in the opening game of the Yankees-Tigers series, Jacoby Ellsbury tried to match it.

The Nationals have claimed Matt Thornton off waivers, and the Yankees have sent the lefthanded reliever to Washington, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

Thornton had a 2.55 ERA in 46 games this season and held lefthanded hitters to a .250 average in 56 at-bats. Righthanders hit .243 against him in 37 at-bats.
