Andy Pettitte has been scratched from his start on Wednesday because of "fatigue and achiness" in his pitching shoulder, manager Joe Girardi announced on Tuesday.

Pettitte, 37, will be shut down until the Yankees go to Seattle this weekend. If a bullpen session scheduled for this weekend goes well, he will start against the Angels in Anaheim on Monday.

"It's a concern," Girardi said. He said the Yankees were hoping to "nip this as soon as we can."

Pettitte told Girardi of a "dull ache" in his shoulder in the fifth inning on his last start on Friday in Baltimore. Girardi said Pettitte's problem is not thought to be as serious as a shoulder issue he had in the second half of last year. This time, Pettitte did visit with doctors but did not have an MRI, Girardi said.

"I am confident that this will work," Girardi said. "If it doesn't, we might have to sit him for another 10 days."

The Yankees' rotation is their biggest concern heading into the postseason. Pettitte (13-6, 4.14 ERA) has been their second-best starter after CC Sabathia. His absence in the playoffs would be a huge blow to the Yankees, who would have to rely on the inconsistent A.J. Burnett and the much-debated Joba Chamberlain.

"A lot of things can change if you have a couple injuries," Girardi said.

Chad Gaudin will start in Pettitte's place on Wednesday.
