Yankees at RaysST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Chien-Ming Wang's season is officially over.
After meeting with Dr. James Andrews yesterday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala., it was determined Wang would have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder capsule this morning. Dr. Andrews will perform the surgery.
The shoulder capsule is the fibrous membrane that surrounds the shoulder joint.
The Yankees were already beginning to plan as if they would not have Wang the rest of the season, though Dr. Andrews' findings surprised them somewhat.
"There were no complaints at all about his shoulder until he came out of the game," pitching coach Dave Eiland said after last night's game, referencing Wang's last start, July 4 against the Blue Jays when he left after 51/3 innings. "So there were no warning signs that we knew of."
Aceves fatigued. Alfredo Aceves has not appeared in the series and said after the game he has "fatigue" in his right shoulder. Aceves said he will play catch before tonight's game to determine if he'll be able to pitch. But he stressed he was not injured and was not in pain.
