Yankee fans set for World Series Game 1
World Series Game 1: Phillies 6, Yankees 1
The Boss is back.
George Steinbrenner made his first appearance at the new Yankee Stadium last night since the April 16 home opener. A Town & Country minivan, specially equipped to hold a wheelchair in the back, rolled through the basement corridor of the Stadium and pulled up to the VIP elevators at 7:09 p.m.
Steinbrenner, 79, has been in failing health and has stayed at his home in Tampa, Fla., since he appeared for the opening of the new stadium. Accompanied by Dr. Andrew Boyer, Steinbrenner's personal physician, as well as his daughter Jessica and son-in-law Felix Lopez, Steinbrenner headed straight up to a suite.
"I'm thrilled," manager Joe Girardi said a little more than three hours before Game 1.
Girardi, who said he talked to The Boss "a couple times a month" during the season, said the Yankees making the Series in their first year at the new Stadium was meaningful. "I'm sure it means a lot because of his desire for excellence all the time and what he's done for this organization and this city," Girardi said. "Every year he spares nothing to put a winner on the field. So I'm sure it means a lot."
