Whitley met with head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, who recommended the surgery. Ahmad will perform the surgery Tuesday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The team did get some good news Monday, though. Masahiro Tanaka threw a 29-pitch bullpen session earlier in the day at Nationals Park ahead of their two-game set against the Nationals starting Tuesday. The Yankees placed their ace on the 15-day disabled list with a forearm strain and writs tendinitis on April 28.
