Whitey Ford made his MLB debut July 1, 1950 and won his first nine decisions before losing a game in relief. The 21-year-old finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting to Boston's Walt Dropo, who batted .322 with 34 homers and 144 RBIs. Ford appeared in 20 games with 12 starts. "The Chairman of the Board" pitched seven complete games and two shutouts. He missed the next two seasons to serve in the Army during the Korean War. Ford’s 236 wins remain a franchise record.
