The Yankees have placed rightfielder Carlos Beltran on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to May 13, the team announced Thursday's Subway Series finale at Citi Field.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees signed righthanded pitcher Chase Whiltey to a major league contract and designated reliever Bruce Billings for assignment.
Beltran has been battling a bone spur in his elbow, for which he receiver a cortisone shot Monday, in the hopes of avoiding surgery. Beltran is told he would miss six to eight weeks if surgery is required, Newsday's Erik Boland reported.
The starters for Thursday's game are Whitley for the Yankees (20-19) and Jacob deGrom for the Mets (19-20). Both pitchers are making their major league debuts.
