Avery Johnson named Eastern Conference coach of the month

The NBA on Monday announced its named Avery Johnson as the Eastern Conference coach of the month, recognizing him for guiding the Nets to some franchise bests in their first season in Brooklyn.

The Nets posted 11 wins through their first 15 games, the most in franchise history. They also recorded the largest road win in club history when they clobbered the Magic 107-68 in their first meeting in Orlando on Nov. 9.

In addition, they've collected a few notable wins, including a pair against the Celtics and one versus the Knicks.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson also was up for the award.

Memphis' Lionel Hollins was named Western Conference coach of the month for leading the Grizzlies to a league-best 12-2 mark.

Other nominees for the award were: Atlanta’s Larry Drew, Charlotte’s Mike Dunlap, Miami’s Erik Spoelstra, Mike Woodson, Oklahoma City’s Scott Brooks and San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich.
