Yankees manager Joe Girardi received a standing ovation during yesterday's Knicks-Celtics game at the Garden when he was presented the Sweetwater Clifton "City Spirit" Award for November.
In the early-morning hours of Nov. 5 after the Yankees clinched their 27th world championship, Girardi was heading home when he stopped on the Cross County Parkway in Westchester to help Marie Henry, 27, who had lost control of her car and crashed into a wall. Girardi flagged down police to assist Henry, who suffered minor injuries.
The award is named in honor of Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, the first African-American to play for the Knicks. It recognizes individuals who have made a difference in the lives of others. The Knicks' front office chooses a winner each month to honor on the court during a game.
