Jason Kidd won’t play tonight against the Magic because of a sore lower back. James White will replace Kidd in the starting lineup.

This will be the fifth game Kidd will miss this season because of a back issue. He missed four games from Nov. 26-Dec. 2 with lower back spasms.

Kidd aggravated his back in Thursday’s win in Boston, but he played in the Knicks’ back-to-back Saturday and Sunday against Philadelphia and Atlanta.

It hampered Kidd in those two games as he went scoreless and totaled 20 minutes.

On Sunday, Kidd played just 5:24 and stayed in the Knicks’ trainers’ room receiving treatment. Mike Woodson said it was his decision to rest Kidd because he had been playing him extra minutes with Raymond Felton out.

“He’s sore,” Woodson said. “We’re going to rest him and see how he feels tomorrow and [he'll] probably play Friday.”

Woodson has said he wants to limit Kidd to 20-25 minutes per game, with most of that time coming in the second half. Before last weekend, Kidd played at least 31 minutes in 17 of the prior 23 games.

“He's logged a lot of minutes since Raymond’s gone down,” Woodson said. “Now, Raymond's back. We can be a little more cautious I think. If he says he's a little sore than I’ve got to be open-minded to that. Rest him and welcome him back when he's ready to come back “

Tyson Chandler, who said he felt like he got “whiplash,” in Sunday's game, will play tonight.
