Knicks remain hobbled, unsure about New Year's Day lineup
Mike Woodson was looking forward to today’s practice because he was hoping to have nearly a full complement of players out there.
But Carmelo Anthony didn’t practice because of a hyperextended left knee, Tyson Chandler rested with a sprained right ankle, Rasheed Wallace couldn’t go with an acute stress reaction in his left foot and the Knicks gave Jason Kidd off for a recovery day.
Woodson said Chandler and Kidd would play play Jan. 1 against Portland. Anthony, Wallace and Amar’e Stoudemire are yet to be determined.
Stoudemire went through his first full practice with the Knicks since before having a left-knee debridement on Halloween. He said his knee feels better, but he still has some restrictions and isn’t sure whether he will be able to play on New Year’s Day.
“It would be great if I could go on Jan. 1,” Stoudemire said. “I can’t determine how I feel tomorrow or the following day. If the next two days go well and I continue to improve then that will be a great day to start playing.”
But Stoudemire said he’s not even feeling 80 percent in the knee. He wants to be at 100 percent to try and prevent further injury, but he said he also feels compelled to come back because of how banged up the Knicks are.
“If it’s needed for me to sacrifice my body for the betterment of the team then I will,” Stoudemire said. “But hopefully I’ll continue to improve the next two days where I can feel 100 percent before I get back out there.”
Stoudemire said it’s possible for him to jump pretty close to 20 percent in the next two days.
“Yeah, yeah, it can,” he said. “Depending - after a hard day like today when you can feel much better tomorrow and that’d be a great sign of knowing that everything is on the improvement level. If I feel great tomorrow then that’ll be a phenomenal sign for me.”
Anthony shot around by himself. He didn’t appear limited as he was lifting off on his jump shots.
Iman Shumpert went through the non-contact part of practice and then worked out on the side with assistant and strength and conditioning coaches.
