The Knicks continue to say they’re not counting the Celtics out despite their unimpressive 16-17 record heading into tonight.

It’s not just that the Knicks aren’t trying to wake up the potentially sleeping giant by saying Boston’s time has passed.

They know Doc Rivers’ Celtics have many players who are battled tested and know how to win – something the Knicks have acquired the past two...

The Knicks will be without their top two scorers tonight when they play the Suns.

Carmelo Anthony won’t play due to a hyper-extended left knee and Raymond Felton is out with sprained ligaments in his right fifth finger, or pinkie. Both injuries occurred in yesterday’s 100-94 loss to at the Lakers.

Anthony hurt his knee when Marcus Camby fell into him late in the first half. But Anthony...

Jason Kidd didn’t make the trip to Milwaukee.

The lower back spasms that kept him out of Monday’s overtime loss to the Nets will keep him out of tomorrow’s game against the Bucks. The Knicks are listing him as day-to-day.

Ronnie Brewer, however, is expected to play.

Brewer dislocated his left ring finger in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter against the Nets. It’s his non-shooting...

Ronnie Brewer had his left leg in a long black compression device while the Knicks practiced today.

Mike Woodson called it precautionary because Brewer had soreness and swelling in the left knee that was scoped in September. The Knicks are calling him probable for tomorrow’s game against the Spurs.

“He’ll play,” Woodson said. “It’s a precaution. Today we weren’t going to do much anyway....

Knicks shooting for 4-0 start against Mavericks

Mike Woodson said yesterday the Knicks were “kicking around” the idea of making a change in the starting lineup. Then this morning Woodson said the Knicks would “probably go,” with the same starting five against the Mavericks. But …

“It could change before game time based on who they start,” Woodson said. “So we'll see.”

If the Mavericks start Elton Brand – who didn’t play in Dallas’...

1. Depth

Having Jason Kidd, J.R. Smith, Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, Iman Shumpert (when healthy), Rasheed Wallace and Kurt Thomas means you have depth and the already injury-plagued Knicks may need it.

2. Leadership

Letting Jeremy Lin go wasn’t a popular decision, but the Knicks improved at point guard with more polished and respected players Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and Pablo...

Lineup shuffling and big men updates

Head coach Mike Woodson of the New York

And so it begins.

Amar’e Stoudemire’s injury has opened up the possibility to Mike Woodson playing different lineups depending on the match-ups.

This is not the ideal situation because you want to have the same starting five as much as possible.

But take tonight for example.

The Knicks could start Raymond Felton, Ronnie Brewer, Tyson Chandler, Kurt Thomas and Carmelo Anthony...

The Knicks will use their third different starting lineup in three preseason games, but the biggest thing for them is Amar’e Stoudemire is playing tonight.

Stoudemire missed the first two games with a bruised left knee. Coach Mike Woodson said he would play against the Raptors and then might be given off tomorrow in Albany when the Knicks face Boston.

“If I’m going to play him some big...

Amar’e Stoudemire and J.R. Smith returned to practice today, but another familiar face was missing.

Steve Novak didn’t practice. The Knicks called it a recovery day. Mike Woodson said Novak was “fatigued” from playing 38 minutes in Saturday’s OT preseason win over the Celtics.

“We gave Novak the day off,” Woodson said. “He was a little tired from the other night, all the minutes that...

Amar'e Stoudemire works on free throws during team

Amar’e Stoudemire bruised his left knee in practice yesterday and is out for tonight’s preseason opener against the Wizards.

The Knicks are downplaying the injury. Mike Woodson said, “If this was a regular season game he would play.” But after everything Stoudemire went through last season and the age of the team always being an issue, any injury raises questions.

At least at this point...
