Jason Smith received a standing ovation from Hornets fans last night . . . for the wrong reason.

With the Hornets up 89-83 on the Clippers, Smith hip-checked Blake Griffin on a Los Angeles fastbreak. Griffin hit the ground hard, and took a few seconds to get back up.

The foul was ruled a Flagrant 2, meaning Smith was ejected from the game. While he was walking into the locker room, Hornets fans erupted, and Smith waved his arms to egg them on.

Smith will probably receive some sort of suspension -- possibly up to five games -- for the malicious hit. He could also be hit with a fine.

Hornets fans won't be suspended, but will be the subject of ridicule from the Twitterverse for the next day or two.
