Deron Williams officially signs with Nets
Deron Williams is truly the face of the Brooklyn Nets now.
The superstar point guard inked his new five-year, $98-million contract just after the NBA’s moratorium on player transactions was lifted at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. Williams, who mulled choosing between the Nets or his hometown Mavericks, signed the pact in Las Vegas where he’s training with the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team for the Games in London later this month.
Williams tweeted that he signed his contract on an iPad. ESPN reported Williams can opt out of the deal after the fourth year.
At one point close to when free agency began July 1 -- during a round of golf on Long Island with Jason Kidd -- Williams was leaning toward bolting to Dallas. But he opted to go with Brooklyn once GM Billy King swung the deal to bring Hawks guard Joe Johnson here. He just felt the Mavericks’ roster beyond Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t very appealing.
Williams’ re-signing is just one of the Nets’ many expected moves that should become official over the coming days now that transactions are allowed. The trade swapping Johnson for Anthony Morrow, Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro, Jordan Williams, DeShawn Stevenson, and a 2013 first-round pick acquired from the Rockets, should go through soon.
The Nets also re-signed swingman Gerald Wallace to a four-year, $40-million deal, acquired forward Reggie Evans in a sign-and-trade with the Clippers, and also signed Bosnian forward Mirza Teletovic.
Additionally, they're working on an agreement with center Brook Lopez.
Of course, there’s the never-ending saga surrounding a possible Dwight Howard trade. Rumors continue to fly regarding many scenarios involving the Nets, though reportedly the potential trade involving multiple teams that would’ve netted Howard for Brooklyn is deal.
However, the Nets reportedly are still in play for Howard’s services and haven’t given up hope about acquiring Howard. Howard, who’s made it clear that he’ll only sign an extension if traded to the Nets, could have avoided this whole saga.
But he didn’t surprise everyone by reversing course just before the trade deadline, opting in to the final year of his contract.
