St. John's once again has one of the top shot-blocking centers in the nation. Red Storm coach Steve Lavin announced on Friday afternoon that Chris Obekpa will be allowed to return for his junior season in 2014-15 after previously being granted a release to transfer.

After a postseason exodus of talent, it came as good news to St. John’s basketball when 6-11 Christ the King center Adonis Delarosa made a verbal commitment to the Red Storm on Wednesday. Delarosa so far is the lone member of coach Steve Lavin’s 2014 recruiting class.

If St. John’s had been able to squeeze past No. 9 Villanova Saturday at Wells Fargo Center, the Red Storm probably could have punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. With the departure of coach Brad Stevens to the Boston Celtics this season, Butler has gone from a perennial NCAA tournament team to last place in the new Big East. Still, the Bulldogs at least have been a tough out all season, going 2-4 in overtime games.

It almost seemed like a gift when Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard announced the suspensions of starters Eugene Teague and Brian Oliver before Thursday night’s St. John’s game at the Prudential Center in Newark. St. John’s sophomore center Chris Obekpa was suspended for the Red Storm’s Tip-Off as well as the team’s two exhibition games against San Francisco State scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3, the University announced Friday. The 6-9 graduate of Our Savior New American was suspended for university policy.
