Heisman race still open

Alabama's AJ McCarron drops back to pass against

It's rare to see the Heisman Trophy race in such flux. For a while, it was all about Johnny Manziel, then it was about Marcus Mariota, then about Jameis Winston. At this point, it's anybody's race. If integrity and character weren't factors in the voting, Winston would probably win in a walk. But his legal problems opened the door for two to three other players. A.J. McCarron, who bested Manziel...

Slowly but surely, Baylor is creeping into the national championship race. If the Bears can win at No. 10 Oklahoma State on Saturday, things could get really tight for 3rd-ranked Ohio State, which plays lowly Indiana on Saturday. After that the Buckeyes play an unranked Michigan team. Urban Meyer’s crew will have to win impressively the next two weeks and in the Big Ten title game to keep Baylor...

Oregon couldn’t have picked a worse week to lose its first game of the season. With Alabama, Florida State and Baylor winning in dominating fashion and Ohio State still undefeated, the Ducks fell from third to sixth in the latest BCS standings.

Making matters worse for the Ducks, they fell behind Stanford in the BCS standings and PAC-12 North standings. If Stanford wins its remaining three...

SEC takes hit in first BCS poll

Notice anything strange about the BCS rankings? There are more ACC teams (3) in the top 10 then SEC teams (2). And there are just as many PAC-12 and BIG 12 teams (2) as Southeastern Conference squads.

That was a result of a tumultuous weekend that featured five ranked SEC teams losing. Texas A&M, LSU, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida all took a loss. Making matters even more intriguing,...

It’s another weekend and another group of games with national title implications. Florida State-Clemson is the key game as the winner gets a leg up in the BCS race. Missouri got a huge boost with a 15-point win over Georgia, but lost its quarterback, while UCLA-Stanford might be the most important PAC-12 game this season.

No. 22 Florida (4-2, 3-1 SEC) @ No. 14 Missouri (6-0, 2-0), Noon: Missouri...

It’s taken until the eighth week of the college football season to get a matchup of top 5 teams. And it’s a great one in the ACC.

No. 5 Florida State (5-0, 3-0 in ACC) visits No. 3 Clemson (6-0, 4-0) in Death Valley on Saturday night (ABC, 8 p.m.) with the stakes about as high as they can get. The winner not only takes control of the ACC’s Atlantic Division but also takes a giant leap in the...

Here’s a little mid-season Heisman Hype

In the thick of things…

Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson, Sr.: Boyd (1,783 yards, 15 TDs, 2 INT) doesn’t get the Heisman Hype other players get because he plays in the ACC. But the Tigers are 6-0 and have an excellent chance of making a BCS bowl appearance. Winning the ACC conference championship in addition to an undefeated regular season would raise Boyd’s...

UConn and Rutgers disappoint

A few quick notes on the opening weekend of college football.

Rutgers: How long are we to drink the Kool-Aid. Instead of kicking the extra point to force a fifth OT in their 52-51 4OT loss at Fresno State, the Scarlet Knights went for two. Ok, so you like to see coaches taking chances. It can make the games more exciting for the fans. But losses in college football are tough to swallow. One...
