A fighter is never truly out of a match until he is counted out.

Enter former two-division champion Andre Berto. Berto will take on Jesus Soto Karass in a 12-round welterweight scrap on Saturday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio on SHOWTIME.

Berto, although sporting an excellent record of 28-2, needs a win in the worst way. He’s dropped two of his last three fights to Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero.

Normally, losing to two fighters of that caliber isn’t the worst thing in the world. But it could be for Berto, who was hoping to get a shot at Floyd Mayweather at some point. The fact that he lost a unanimous-decision to Guerrero (he was knocked down in the 1st & 2nd rounds), who in turn was dominated by Mayweather, doesn’t bode well for Berto.

But here lies a golden opportunity for Berto, once considered a rising star in the welterweight division. Soto Karass (27-8-3) isn’t exactly world-championship material, but he is a solid opponent.

A fight like Berto, who is still in his prime at 29, needs to beat a solid opponent. With a bout against Marcos Maidana and two fights against Mike Jones under his belt, Karass is not a fighter Berto should take lightly.

A loss could all but end any shot Berto has to fight Mayweather. A win should keep in the mix for one of Mayweather’s four remaining fights on his six-bout deal with SHOWTIME.

Said Berto: "The show is called Knockout Kings, but no matter how it goes, I know it's going to be exciting. You're definitely going to see a lot of speed, a lot of power and a lot of explosiveness, it's going to be an exciting show. It's going to be a hell of a fight; I'm in shape. I'm in good spirits. I'm focused and I know Soto Karass is ready too."

But will that focus and spirit translate in to success in the ring?
