Danny Garcia-Lucas Matthysse added to Floyd Mayweather card
It looks like boxing has gotten it right.
Many of the recent mega-fight shows feature a stellar main event with mostly no-name fighters on the under card.
All of that changed on Thursday with the Golden Boy Promotions announcement that the Lucas Matthysse-Danny Garcia bout was added to the Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez September 14th card at the MGM Grand.
“This is the fight I wanted and the fight that I asked for. That is why I’m so happy this fight has been made and will be part of a huge event,” said Garcia. “I’m more confident than ever in my abilities and I’m going to show it on September 14.”
It’s rare these days to see a boxing card that features four of the worlds top fighters. Mayweather is considered the top pound-for-pound fight in the world, while Alvarez is considered the best young boxer in the sport.
Garcia and Matthysse (pictured) have become hot commodities recently and should enhance the SHOWTIME pay-per-view numbers. “I’m glad I finally get a chance to fight Danny Garcia,” said Matthysse. “This is the fight that the boxing world –especially my country Argentina– and I wanted.”
"Floyd was adamant about giving fans what they wanted to see when he chose Canelo Alvarez as his opponent for his September 14 fight," said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. "We're thrilled that Garcia vs. Matthysse has been added to the card, and that fans will be getting even more boxing at its best."
Garcia (26-0), the WBA Super light welterweight champ, has put together an impressive string of wins, dominating Erik Morales twice, Amir Khan and Zab Judah.
Matthysse (34-2), the interim WBC light welterweight champ, scored a third-round knockout over Lamont Peterson in May. His two losses, both split decisions to Devon Alexander and Zab Judah, were considered controversial by most observers.
