Donaire named BWAA fighter of the year

Nonito Donaire fought four times in 2012 and won all four bouts, raising his record to 30-1. The WBO superbantamweight champ was named Fighter of the Year for 2012 b the Boxing Writers Association of America.

It’s the fourth time in the last seven years that a Filipino boxer has won the award. Manny Pacquiao won in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Donaire’s trainer Robert Garcia won the Eddie Futch “Trainer of the Year” award, the fourth bout between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez won the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier “Fight of the Year” award, while Al Haymon was voted 2012 Manager of the Year.

Max Kellerman was recognized for his work on HBO and was given the “Excellence in Boxing Journalism” award.

Middleweight Danny Jacobs, who overcame a bout with cancer, returned to the ring last October. He was voted the “Courage in Overcoming Adversity” award.

Steve Farhood took home the Marvin Kohn “Good Guy” award, while Peter Finney the A.J. Liebling received the BWAA award for "Outstanding Boxing Writing."
