From an under the radar amateur to a hot prospect, Freeport’s Patrick Day is fast becoming the fighter everyone is going to want to see in a few years.

His amateur record of 75-5 is nothing to overlook. Neither is his list of awards, including the 2012 152-pound USA Boxing National Championship, the 2012 PAL National Championship and the 2012 Golden Gloves title.

Day’s skills will be on display on Saturday, June 29 when he fights on the New Legend Boxing, Old World Boxing & W.O.N. Promotions “International Fight Night” card at the Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct Raceway. Day’s opponent hasn’t been announced.

“This kid is already on another level,” said Day’s trainer, Joe Higgins. “I can’t wait until he’s 23 and 24.”

Higgins, who runs the Freeport PAL boxing program, has been in Day’s corner since the 2010 Freeport High School graduate took up the sport six years ago.

The combo has been a success so far. Day, a 2012 Olympic Alternate, is 3-0 (2 KOs). His skills caught the eye of DiBella Entertainment boss Lou DiBella, who signed the fighter to a contract in February.

“We don’t want to rush him,” said Higgins. “But he’s so mature.”

Day has trained with several well-known commodities in the boxing world, including Luis Collazo and Delvin Rodriguez. Undefeated light heavyweight Seanie Monaghan has also taken it upon himself to help Day get ahead.

“We could see him being like a Canelo Alvarez in a year or two,” said Higgins.

Higgins lofty expectations may seem self-serving, but Day’s combination of speed and skill has made him a must-see prospect.
