Live blog: Mayweather KOs Victor Ortiz

People will be talking about the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight for a long time. But not for the reasons boxing hoped for. It ends in round four with Mayweather knocking out Ortiz. The knockout occurred moments after Ortiz intentionally head butted Mayweather. The knockout also occurred when Ortiz had his hands down and was looking at referee Joe Cortez.

We will hear a lot about whether it was sporting or legal, or both, for quite some time.

Here is the live blog of the event:

On the undercard, the legend Erik Morales won the vacant WBC 140-pound title by stopping Pablo Cesar Cano in the 10th round.

The main event between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz will begin shortly.

Stay tuned.

In the main undercard bout, televised from The Staples Center, in Los Angeles, Canelo Alvarez stopped Alfonso Gomez in the sixth round to retain his WBC junior middleweight title.

Interesting. The champion usually comes to the ring second. Not tonight, as Ortiz is now entering the ring.

Two interesting physical stats. Floyd Mayweather has a three-inch reach advantage. And since the weigh-in, Mayweather has put on roughly three pounds, Oritz 14.

Richie from Levittown says Mayweather by 11th-round TKO. I have Floyd in 12.

Round 1: Pretty uneventful round. Floyd wins it because of his lead right hands. But I like that Ortiz is standing his ground. 10-9, Mayweather.

Round 2: A very good round. Floyd wins because he's the sharper puncher. But Ortiz is making him fight. He's putting the pressure on Floyd that not many fighters are able to do. 10-9, Mayweather (20-18, Mayweather)

Round 3: Ortiz essentially takes the round off. Floyd keeps landing. There is no way Ortiz can win moving backward or side to side. 10-9, Mayweather (30-27, Mayweather)

Round 4: Oritz intentionally head butts Mayweather. Floyd sucker punchers Ortiz and knocks him out.

Floyd is right, "It's protect yourselft at all times."

Then, when Floyd is pressed for an explanation by Larry Merchant, Floyd begins cursing at Merchant. An unreal night, just got surreal.
