Robert Guerrero not scared of Mayweather

Stepping into the ring to fight a future hall-of-famer can rattle even the best of boxers.

But Robert Guerrero (31-1-1) doesn’t consider himself just any boxer. In fact, the interim WBC welterweight champ said there will be no pressure on him when he takes on Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0) on May 4 at the MGM Grand live on SHOWTIME pay-per-view.

It will be the biggest fight of Guerrero’s career. But Guerrero wasn’t showing any panic on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. “There’s been no pressure for this fight,” said Guerrero. “Being by my wife’s side when she battled cancer, that’s pressure.”

It’s hard to argue that point. It’s also hard to argue Guerrero’s confidence. Wins against Andre Berto, Michael Katsidis, Vincente Escobedo and Joel Casamayor has made Guerrero a hot commodity.

Even Mayweather gave Guerrero credit, saying “He’s a solid opponent.” Mayweather also gave Guerrero credit for his convincing win over Berto. But Guerrero isn’t looking for any validation from Mayweather.

“He can talk, say this and that and do whatever he wants,” Guerrero added. “It doesn’t get to me.”

Guerrero is convinced he has a solid chance to beat Mayweather and said the undefeated welterweight’s decision to take time off coupled with a two-month stint in jail last summer has made him “ripe for the picking.”

“It takes a toll,” Guerrero said of Mayweather’s inactivity. “That ring rust is always there.”

Guerrero, although beaming with confidence, understands he will enter the fight as a heavy underdog in most boxing circles.

Said Guerrero: “It’s a modern-day David and Goliath.”
