The USA Today Coaches' Poll was released today. No surprise that defending national champion Alabama is the preseason No. 1 team. The USA Today poll is one of the key components in the BCS standings.

A couple of notes:

Boise State (No. 5) and TCU (No. 7) are the highest preseason rankings for teams not in conferences with automatic BCS bids. The BCS system started in 1998.

The Broncos open the season against No. 6 Virginia Tech on Sept. 6 in Landover, Md.

The Big 12 has the most teams in the top 10 -- Texas (No. 4), Oklahoma (No. 8) and Nebraska (No. 9).

The Big Ten has four teams in th top 15 -- Ohio State (No. 2), Iowa (No. 10), Wisconsin (No. 12) and Penn State (No. 14).

USC is not in the top 25, nor in the list of teams receiving votes. The Trojans are banned from the rankings due to NCAA sanctions stemming from the Reggie Bush saga.
