VCU holds off Drexel in CAA final

Darius Theus had 16 points and five steals and Troy Daniels made four huge free throws in the final 19 seconds, allowing VCU to hang on and beat top-seeded Drexel, 59-56, Monday nightin the championship of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in Richmond, Va..

VCU (28-6) was the biggest story of last year's NCAA Tournament, when coach Shaka Smart's team reached the Final Four after being one of the last teams picked for the field.

Loyola 48, Fairfield 44: Loyola's pressing defense kept Fairfield without a point for almost 8 minutes to open the second half in the Metro Atlantic Tournament final in Springfield, Mass. Loyola (24-8), from Baltimore, earned only its second NCAA berth; the first was in 1994.

St. Mary's 78, Gonzaga 74: Matthew Dellavedova scored 22 points, including two clinching free throws in overtime in Las Vegas as Saint Mary's (27-5) claimed its second West Coast Conference Tournament title and automatic NCAA bid in three years.

Elias Harris led No. 24 Gonzaga (25-6) with 22 points, including a three-pointer with 2 seconds left in regulation to force OT.

Davidson 93, W. Carolina 91: Clint Mann's dunk with 1:04 left in the second OT put Davidson (26-7) ahead to stay in the Southern Conference final in Asheville, N.C.

East Coast Conference champion LIU Post (23-5) will meet Adelphi (20-8) in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional on Saturday at Assumption in Worcester, Mass. In the women's regional Friday in Waltham, Mass., ECC winner Dowling (22-6) meets Holy Family (24-7) and Post (21-9) plays Southern Connecticut (24-5).
