DePaul men's basketball coach Jerry Wainwright has been fired, the school announced on its website today.

Assistant coach Tracy Webster will served as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

"At this time a change needed to be made in the direction of the men's basketball program at DePaul University," DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto. "We are very grateful to Coach Wainwright for his service to our student-athletes and our University community. He provided unwavering leadership in assisting our student-athletes in both their academic and personal growth."

Wainwright, who was in his fifth season at the school, was 59-80 since coming over from Richmong in 2005.

What doomed Wainwright, who led UNC Wilmington to the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and 2002 and Richmond to the tourney in 2004, was his 20-51 record in the Big East.

The Blue Demons (7-8, 0-3 Big East) have lost 22 straight conference games.

Wainwright is the third coach in Division I to be fired or leave their position. Dartmouth's Terry Dunn quit his post last week amid a 3-10 start and Dereck Whittenburg was fired from Fordham late November.
