NO. 5 GEORGIA AT NO. 8 CLEMSON
The best matchup of the opening weekend features teams with BCS national title aspirations and two of the top quarterbacks in the country -- Georgia's Aaron Murray and Clemson's Tajh Boyd. Remember, it was Georgia that took eventual national champion Alabama to the brink in last season's SEC title game. Clemson playmaking wide receiver Sammy Watkins should be a major concern for an inexperienced Georgia defense. |

At the Georgia Dome (Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game)
Alabama's quest for a BCS national title three-peat begins against a Virginia Tech team that needs quarterback Logan Thomas to shake off his subpar 2012 season and return to 2011 form. Alabama should be in fine shape with star quarterback A.J. McCarron and running back T.J. Yeldon returning. As always, expect Alabama's defense to be dominant. |

At Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas (Cowboys Classic)
LSU had six defensive players taken in the first three rounds of April's NFL draft, so the revamped defense will be a focus in this game. The Tigers, however, should be fine on offense with Zach Mettenberger returning at quarterback and wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry as downfield threats. TCU's defense should be very good, perhaps the best in the Big 12. But can TCU's offense move the ball enough against the LSU defense? |

MISSISSIPPI STATE VS. No. 13 OKLAHOMA STATE
At Reliant Stadium, Houston (AdvoCare Texas Kickoff)
Oklahoma State is the favorite to win the Big 12 and land a spot in a BCS bowl game. There's no doubt that the Cowboys have plenty of talent up and down the roster. The big question is whether they can live up to the hefty expectations. The real measuring stick will be in Big 12 play, but this game against a good SEC team will be revealing. |

NORTH CAROLINA AT NO. 6 SOUTH CAROLINA
Thursday
Is this the season South Carolina breaks through and gets into a BCS game? The talent is definitely there with defensive star and Heisman Trophy contender Jadeveon Clowney and quarterback Connor Shaw leading what should be a good offense. Larry Fedora has North Carolina moving in the right direction and quarterback Bryn Renner is a good one. |

NO. 22 NORTHWESTERN AT CALIFORNIA
The Wildcats -- coming off a 10-win season and long-awaited bowl victory -- return quarterback Kain Colter and running back Venric Mack. The schedule will be brutal in the Big Ten with home games against Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State, and trips to Wisconsin and Nebraska. But before the Wildcats can worry about the Big Ten, there's business in California, which will be breaking in a new quarterback. |

NO. 19 BOISE STATE AT WASHINGTON
Boise State stumbled in its opener last season at Michigan State, but the Broncos' offense should be up and running a lot quicker this season. Boise State actually beat Washington in last season's Maaco Bowl Las Vegas. Washington quarterback Keith Price is really good, but needs to show his 2011 form -- when he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns. |

At MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J. (New York's College Classic)
The two old rivals meet again. Penn State -- still buried under NCAA sanctions -- is coming off a surprising 8-4 season in Bill O’Brien's rookie season and with plenty of offensive talent returning. But the quarterback spot is a big question mark. Will it be top recruit and true freshman Christian Hackenberg or junior college transfer Tyler Ferguson? Syracuse also has a big question mark at quarterback, as well as new coach Scott Shafer. |

MISSISSIPPI AT VANDERBILT
Thursday
Both programs are on the rise. There's plenty of hype around the Mississippi program with head coach Hugh Freeze bringing in one of the country's top recruiting classes (with defensive end Robert Nkemdiche leading the way). Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin is building a solid program. The Commodores return a bulk of their starters on both sides of the ball from a team that won nine games and earned a bowl victory last season. |

NO. 11 FLORIDA STATE AT PITTSBURGH
Monday
Florida State lost a lot, with quarterback E.J. Manuel and defensive end Bjoern Werner being the two big names. It will be interesting to see how redshirt freshman Jameis Winston -- a former five-star recruit -- does replacing Manuel. If Winston lives up to the hype, the Seminoles could be dangerous. Former Rutgers quarterback Tom Savage will start for the Panthers as Pittsburgh is welcomed to the ACC. |
