St. John’s head coach Steve Lavin added Darrick Martin to his coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Martin played for Lavin at UCLA in 1991-92 when Lavin was an assistant. Martin, a point guard, played 13 seasons in the NBA for seven teams. Martin spent the past two season with the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach and player development specialist.

Lavin also announced that he had promoted assistant coaches Rico Hines and Tony Chiles within his staff.

Mike Dunlap, who was an assistant on Lavin’s staff and served as interim head coach last season while Lavin was out on medical leave, left earlier in the year to become the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats.
