St. John’s begins the season as the top team in the Metro Hoops poll. After a 25-point, 13-rebound performance by Aliyyah Hanford in the Red Storm’s season-opening win against Sacred Heart, they will be a hard team to supplant. Rutgers, Seton Hall and Marist make out the top four, while Sacred Heart sits at No. 5.

Manhattan, after an impressive double overtime win over La Salle, checks in at No. 2, while St. John’s sits at 0-3 despite a loss to Wisconsin to opens its season. Last season was good to the New York City metro-area college basketball teams as four squads (Stony Brook, St. John's, Iona, LIU Brooklyn) made post season appearances.

St. John’s sophomore center Chris Obekpa was suspended for the Red Storm’s Tip-Off as well as the team’s two exhibition games against San Francisco State scheduled for Nov. 2 and 3, the University announced Friday. The 6-9 graduate of Our Savior New American was suspended for university policy.

St. John’s will play in the Maggie Dixon Classic on December 22 at Madison Square Garden for the third straight season, the school announced Monday. It will be the third straight season the Red Storm will play in the Classic.
St. John’s will face Texas A&M at 11:00 a.m. Reigning NCAA champion Connecticut will face California in the second game.

The pieces are falling into place for St. John’s coach Steve Lavin, who landed the most important one yet when Philadelphia point guard Rysheed Jordan verbally committed to the Red Storm Thursday morning. With the help of top recruiter Tony Chiles, Lavin essentially wooed Jordan out from under the nose of Temple coach Fran Dunphy as well as third finalist UCLA, Lavin’s former employer.

Two St. John's men's basketball players and one Notre Dame player were suspended for a game each following a fight at the end of their game Tuesday.
Sir'Dominic Pointer of St. John's and Notre Dame's Cameron Biedscheid were both ejected immediately after exchanging blows at the end of Notre Dame's 66-40 win in Souith Bend, Ind. Amir Garrett of St. John's was also ejected or leaving the bench.
