The Gaels will play second-seeded Manhattan for the

There was a change in the top as the Iona Gaels took over the top spot after earning a berth in Monday night's MAAC title game against Manhattan. St. John's dropped one spot to second despite a thrilling win over Marquette, while Stony Brook stayed third after knocking off Hartford in an America East semifinal. The remainder of the top 10 remained the same.

The elephant in Stony Brook’s room, as everyone often reminds coach Steve Pikiell, is the Seawolves’ failure to earn their first NCAA Tournament bid despite all the success they have achieved the past five years – four 20-win seasons, three regular-season America East titles and two previous trips to the conference final to play for the automatic NCAA bid.

Now, Pikiell and the second-seeded...

On March 1, Stony Brook’s women’s basketball team did something no other America East team had been able to do since Jan. 28, 2012. The Seawolves snapped Albany’s record 38-game America East winning streak, and what’s more, they did it on the Great Danes’ home floor.

Just nine days later, the Seawolves (24-7) have to try and repeat the feat, but this time, they are playing Albany (27-4) for...

Seawolves get Hartford in AE semis

ALBANY -- The beauty of this America East conference tournament for Stony Brook is that, unlike last year, the Seawolves don’t have to face Albany on its home floor at SEFCU Arena in the semifinals. As the No. 1 seed a year ago, the SBU left heartbroken after Great Danes guard Mike Black drove for the winning layup in the final seconds of a 61-59 win.

After routing Maine, 80-54, in their...

If this week’s poll looks identical to last week’s, there’s a good reason to think that. Manhattan changed places with Quinnipiac and St. Francis swapped positions with Columbia. The rest of the teams all remained the same.

1. St. John’s (19-11)

2. Iona (20-9)

3. Stony Brook (21-9)

4. Manhattan (22-7)

Last season, No. 1 Stony Brook’s regular-season-ending victory over Albany was a double-edged sword because it dropped the Great Danes to the No. 4 seed and set up an ill-fated meeting in the conference tournament semifinals at SEFCU Arena on the UAlbany campus. A two-point semifinals loss ended the Seawolves’ NCAA tournament hopes.

But this year, the Seawolves (21-9, 13-3 America East) are...

If you're a strict numbers person, Stony Brook's 69-53 loss at Vermont was brutal.

Seawolves’ leading scorer and rebounder Jameel Warney finished with just seven points on 3-for-10 shooting with one board.  Anthony Jackson, who entered the game with 998 points, didn’t score. And Dave Coley, the Seawolves’ fourth-leading point man finished with zero points, too.

Sophomore guard Carson...

Steve Pikiell sings Vermont's praises

If you didn't know better, you'd think Stony Brook basketball coach Steve Pikiell was sports information director at Vermont. Pikiell can cite chapter and verse on an impressive array of Catamounts statistics.

“They’ve won games in our league by an average of 24 points a game,” Pikiell said, embellishing slightly on the actual 22-point margin in conference games that is tops in the NCAA. “They’re...

We have a new No. 1 in the poll as Iona takes over the top spot for the first time this season. The Gaels have won 24 of their last 25 games and hold a one game lead over Marist in the MAAC standings. It was a close call as Iona lost to the Red Storm 78-48 on Nov. 12. St. John’s dropped one place to second after losing its second straight at Creighton last week.

Rutgers and Marist remained...
