Marist MAAC baseball season preview: Red Foxes in the mix for conference title
The Marist Red Foxes baseball team is poised for a run at the MAAC championship this season, led by preseason All-Conference shortstop senior Zach Shank and senior infielder Mike Orefice, a Wappingers Falls native.
The talent-laden Red Foxes are picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in a poll of the conference's nine managers, slightly behind Rider, Canisius and championship favorite Manhattan. Marist finished in the middle of the pack in the conference last season, going 11-12 to place fifth.
Marist heads into its MAAC opener Saturday against Niagara with a 6-8 record after a long road trip to start the season in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. The Red Foxes are coming off winning two out of three in Pennsylvania, beating St. Joseph’s and splitting a doubleheader with Villanova.
Marist is hoping to start its conference home schedule strong against Niagara, a team that struggled during nonconference play with a 4-16 record. Niagara is expected to finish near the bottom of the conference when the season is over.
Senior starting pitcher Brett Houseal is coming off his strongest start of the season, a complete game shutout against Villanova, earning him MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors.
After opening the MAAC baseball season at home against Niagara, the Red Foxes host Fordham in a single nonconference game before heading up north to take on conference foe Siena to close out March.
