Adelphi's men's soccer team will drop down from Division I and join the rest of the university's Division II programs in the Northeast-10 Conference, athletic director Robert Hartwell announced Friday.

The move will be effective for the 2013 season.

“We made this decision after carefully considering the best interest of our student-athletes and the University," Hartwell said in a statement. "Having all our teams competing on a Division II platform is completely in line with our university mission of emphasizing the importance of an education and a well-rounded collegiate experience.”

The team has been playing as a Division I independent.
