News, thoughts and more from the world of college sports across the nation and Long Island.
Could we see an Alabama-Auburn rematch?
As expected, Florida State is No. 1, followed by Ohio State and Auburn. As stated in an earlier post, the debate for who should be No. 2 will rage on. Proof is in the pudding as the Buckeyes have just a .0270 lead over Auburn.
How about this for a scenario? Believe it or not, we could see an Alabama-Auburn rematch in the national title game. If Florida State and Ohio State both lose in their respective conference championship games, and Auburn beats Missouri in the SEC title game, a Crimson Tide-Tigers reunion in the national title game could the likely outcome.
Nothing would delight SEC fans more than a rematch of one of the best college football games in recent memory. Considering that fact that Auburn got two first-place votes in the Associated Press poll and the affinity of people wanting to see the best teams play for the national title, it wouldn't be a shock if Alabama got a boost in the human polls.
As for the rest, Oklahoma State plays Oklahoma in its regular season finale on Saturday, but even a win for the Cowboys might not be enough to vault them into the top two spots. Everyone else –Stanford, South Carolina, Baylor– are too far behind to make any noise.
Missouri picked up a ton of ground and still a title contender. If Missouri beats Auburn and Ohio State or Florida State loses, the Tigers could find themselves in the title game.
Mid-major report: Northern Illinois’ hopes at a BCS Bowl are not lost as the Huskies remained at 14. With Nos. 12 and 13 Clemson both finished with their regular seasons, the Huskies will need a big time performance in the MAC title game against Bowling Green to jump two places to 12. But if they can finish ahead of the highest ranked team in the AAC (No. 16 Central Florida), the Huskies will gain a bid.
According to BCS rules, the highest ranked champion of any non-AQ conference will receive an AQ bid if they are ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS poll or ranked in the top 16 and higher than a champion of an AQ conference.
Northern Illinois lost to Florida State in the Orange Bowl last season, 31-10.
