LIU's Julian Boyd done for season
The depth of LIU will surely be tested for the duration of this season.
Blackbirds senior forward Julian Boyd will miss the remainder of the season after tearing an ACL during the team’s win at Rice on December 12.
The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for LIU (5-4), which has won five straight, but embarks on a five-game road trip beginning December 19. The Blackbirds play at St. Peter’s on Wednesday, followed by Seton Hall, Lamar, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac.
Boyd’s absence means more pressure on seniors Jamal Olasewere and C.J. Garner and junior point guard Jason Brickman. LIU got a huge boost in Sunday’s win over Manhattan from Brandon Thompson, who went off for 23 points. The senior guard hit seven three-pointers in the Blackbirds 75-48 win.
Bay Shore High School graduate Booker Hucks will also need to increase his production. The 6-6 senior had 12 points in 21 minutes against Manhattan.
As for Boyd, he will be eligible to apply for a medical redshirt since he’s played in fewer than 30 percent of LIU’s games. Boyd missed the 2009-2010 season with a heart ailment.
