Power leagues grab 26 at-large bids
Power conferences have always ruled college basketball. Thanks to an exodus of underclassmen to the NBA and an increase of Division I basketball programs over the past two decades, the rule of the power conferences isn’t what it once was.
Of the 37 at-large bids, 26 came from the six power conference and 11 came from the non-power leagues. The biggest surprise came from the Sun Belt as Middle Tennessee State received an at-large bid. The Mountain West Conference also pulled off a shocker as Boise State was picked by the committee.
The Atlantic 10 give five bids, one more than the ACC, while the PAC-12 got five bids, four more than it received last season. The SEC only got three bids, while the Missouri Valley and West Coast Conference got two bids each.
The Big East got eight teams in and would’ve likely had nine if Connecticut was eligible. The Big Ten was well represented with seven bids. Boise Sate or Middle Tennessee State can thank their lucky stars for that.
