The season hasn’t even started and the pressure is already on rookie head coach Joe Tartamella. The St. John’s women’s squad, fresh off their first Sweet 16 season in program history, is ranked 12th in both the Lindy’s and Athlon Sports preseason women’s basketball polls.

The Red Storm, coming off a 24-10 season, returns several key players from last year, including Nadirah McKenith, Eugeneia McPherson, Shenneika Smith, Amber Thompson and Mary Nwachukwu.

Baylor was selected as the No. 1 team in both magazines.

Tartamella steps in for Kim Barnes Arico, who left to take over the head coaching job at Michigan.
