Suffolk CC into NJCAA semifinals
The Suffolk Community College men's soccer team defeated Camden CC, 3-2, in overtime late Thursday and advanced to the semifinal round of the NJCAA tournament.
Jose Alfaro (Huntington) scored the winning goal, his second of the game. No. 4 Suffolk (17-1-2) plays Montgomery, which beat Suffolk in the semifinal last season, on Friday night. The winner advances to the title game against either host Herkimer or Richland.
Alfaro opened the scoring 22 minutes into the game on an assist from Frankie Guzman (Brentwood) to give Suffolk a 1-0 lead. Camden CC tied it 1 at halftime. Suffolk regained the lead 15 minutes into the second half on a cross from Andre Brown to Alfred Lindberg. Camden tied the score four minutes later.
"Camden was very organized and packed it in well," Suffolk coach Frank Vertullo said in a release. "It was difficult to break them down with so many guys behind the ball. The boys continued to work hard and Jose's goal was truly amazing. That has to be the goal of the year, an upper-90 volley from the top of the 18 yard box. Amazing finish."
Suffolk last won the national title in 2010.
