Stony Brook wide receiver Kevin Norrell, who led the Football Championship Subdivision in yards per catch (21.0) last season, has accepted an invitation to play in the NFLPA-sponsored Collegiate Bowl all-star game Jan. 19 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The game will be televised live on ESPN2, and ESPNU will provide live practice coverage during the week.

No one from Notre Dame laid a glove on Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron during the Crimson Tide’s 42-14 victory in the BCS National Championship game Monday at Sun Life Stadium. But McCarron got pushed around by Bama’s All-American center Barrett Jones during a fourth-quarter outburst over a botched snap count.

Stony Brook mens and womens basketball returns to Optimum Local for the second straight season, beginning with the women's game against Binghamton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Pritchard gymnasium.

The conference season is officially underway for the local women’s Division I teams. Early returns have been positive for Hofstra, St. John’s and Stony Brook.

Having unexpectedly led undefeated Notre Dame back to prominence as the No. 1-ranked team in the country, Irish coach Brian Kelly said during Saturday’s media day interviews that speculation about his interest in NFL jobs is just that. If anyone is surprised or disappointed by St. John’s 6-6 start, don’t be. It’s familiar territory for the Red Storm. St. John’s was 7-5 after 12 games last season.
There are some differences between the two squads, as last season’s team didn’t have All-Big East forward Da’Shena Stevens the first 10 games of the season.

On media day, St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison was going to be his point guard because good things happen when you put the ball in his hands. But when the Red Storm opened Big East play Wednesday night at Villanova’s Pavilion, Lavin inserted transfer Jamal Branch as the starter at the point in a three-guard lineup with Harrison and Phil Greene.

Three seasons of excellence at Stony Brook are paying off for running back Miguel Maysonet. The runner-up for the Walter Payton Award as FCS player of the year has been invited to participate in the NFL scouting combine scheduled Feb. 20-26 in Indianapolis, where league personnel experts gather to test, interview and evaluate more than 300 top prospects for the 2013 NFL Draft.
