If you're a strict numbers person, Stony Brook's 69-53 loss at Vermont was brutal.
Seawolves’ leading scorer and rebounder Jameel Warney finished with just seven points on 3-for-10 shooting with one board. Anthony Jackson, who entered the game with 998 points, didn’t score. And Dave Coley, the Seawolves’ fourth-leading point man finished with zero points, too.
Sophomore guard Carson...Read more »
Putting Zeke Upshaw's season for Hofstra in perspective isn't a hard thing to do. Just look at the numbers.
The 6-6 guard is averaging 19.7 points per game, third best in the CAA. He’s had three games of 30 or more points, including 37 in an overtime loss to Richmond in November.
It’s an impressive feat considering he averaged just 1.6 points per game at Illinois State, including 2.5...Read more »
If you didn't know better, you'd think Stony Brook basketball coach Steve Pikiell was sports information director at Vermont. Pikiell can cite chapter and verse on an impressive array of Catamounts statistics.
“They’ve won games in our league by an average of 24 points a game,” Pikiell said, embellishing slightly on the actual 22-point margin in conference games that is tops in the NCAA. “They’re...Read more »
For the past month, St. John's has been one of the hottest teams in college basketball. The Red Storm rose like a phoenix from the ashes of its 0-5 start in Big East play to win nine of its next 10 to climb into firm contention for an NCAA Tournament bid.
But momentum only is as good as your last game, and in this case, coach Steve Lavin’s team has come crashing back to earth with two straight...Read more »
We have a new No. 1 in the poll as Iona takes over the top spot for the first time this season. The Gaels have won 24 of their last 25 games and hold a one game lead over Marist in the MAAC standings. It was a close call as Iona lost to the Red Storm 78-48 on Nov. 12. St. John’s dropped one place to second after losing its second straight at Creighton last week.
Rutgers and Marist remained...Read more »
A narrow loss at Villanova didn’t stop voters from keeping St. John’s in the top spot this week. Iona and Stony Brook just keep winning and held on to the second and third spots. Quinnipiac also held steady at No. 4 after two wins last week. Manhattan split two games last week, but stayed at No. 5.
Wagner is up one spot after winning twice last week, while Columbia, despite winning two, fell...Read more »
Senior forward Jessica Kitrys had 19 points and became Adelphi’s all-time leading scorer as the Panthers topped Pace, 87-50, in a Northeast-10 women’s game. Kitrys has 1,598 points, surpassing the previous mark of 1,590 set by Margaret Pape (1981-84).
Kirtys, who set the record at the 9:21 mark in the first half, shot 7-10 from the field and grabbed six boards. It was the 20th...Read more »
If St. John’s had been able to squeeze past No. 9 Villanova Saturday at Wells Fargo Center, the Red Storm probably could have punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. But even after their 57-54 loss, Steve Lavin expressed confidence in his team’s ability to build a resume strong enough to meet the criteria used by the Selection Committee.

It’s not that Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell doesn’t enjoy having more offensive weapons at his disposal than past editions of the Seawolves have had. But when SBU suffered a 73-69 shootout loss to New Hampshire recently, breaking a 23-game home winning streak in America East play over three years, Pikiell didn’t like the team he saw in the mirror.
The Seawolves (19-8, 11-2 America East)...Read more »
